In Fes-el-Bali, the medina is best discovered on foot, following its alleyways, souks and artisan workshops. From Riad Fès Baraka, you can enter directly through the streets opposite the lane or, a few minutes further on, through Bab Boujloud Gate.
Exploring the medina
The Batha Museum and Bou Inania Madrasa are among the first places to visit. Further on, the alleyways pass through the souks and artisan quarters before reaching Fondouk Nejjarine and Al Quaraouiyine Mosque.
Visiting with a guide
For a first visit, an official guide helps you understand the history of the medina, its organisation and its crafts. Samir and Touria can arrange a half-day visit in the travellers' preferred language.
Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes
This full-day excursion links the Roman remains of Volubilis, the village of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and the imperial city of Meknes. In just a few stages, the route passes through several centuries of Moroccan history.
The Middle Atlas
The Middle Atlas road leads to Ifrane, Azrou and its cedar forest. This excursion is particularly popular with children: Barbary macaques can be observed there, and some willingly approach visitors in the hope of receiving a little food.
Chefchaouen
Around three and a half hours by road from Fez, Chefchaouen can be explored through its blue alleyways, small squares and craft shops. Set in the Rif Mountains, it offers a very different view of Morocco.
Organisation and prices
Visits and excursions can be booked at the riad. Departure is directly from the riad after breakfast, by car with a driver or by minibus for groups.
Guided medina tour: 500 MAD (approximately €50).
Full-day excursion: 1,000 MAD (approximately €100).
