Founded in 789 by Idriss 1st, the medina of Fes is the largest in Morocco. Lose yourself in its labyrinthine streets and colorful bazaars to find your rhythm wealth of medieval exceptional. Monuments, mosques, museums, madrasas, palaces ... How many cultural and architectural legacy that makes the whole medina of Fes is classified cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO. Along the aorta (Tallaa Lakbira), you go through the Zaouia Tijania, the souk of luthiers and Mzara. They worked in craft workshops nearby. Then we reach the place Ennajarines within which lies the sumptuous foundouk sheltering myself museum of arts and woodworking. The street leads to Mechatine Souk and the Tanners district Chouari. It is situated a bit far from the center of the medina because of strong odors. The Tanneries of Fes medina have preserved their appearance since the days of medieval Morocco. Once in this picturesque area, you will be enchanted by the atmosphere that prevails there. You can not miss the skins of animals transported by donkey to be dried in the sun. A series of ponds used to mix colors to obtain the desired color. From the terraces of leather goods, we can observe the colorful wells where tanners work dyeing hides. A rare opportunity to admire the spectacle is the manufacture of leather goods displayed in the shops of the Medina: slippers, belts, bags, jackets, wallets ... The smell is unpleasant but true originality of this trade is worth discovering.
